SKALA (2024)

SKALA is the fourth solo album released under my artist name Ghost Flute & Dice. The first five tracks corresponds to the entire composition divided into its different parts. The sixth track is the same composition and recording just with added watertower ambience between the five parts and then put together for continual listening. Furthermore there is a brilliant video that accompanies the entire album.

SKALA is the result of a creative challenge. In 2021 the festival Piano Days Copenhagen commissioned a new Ghost Flute & Dice piece that was to be premiered in Brønshøj Watertower – a closed down watertower used as cultural venue. The watertower has amazing acoustics with a reverb close to 20 seconds long. I have always avoided large soundscapes in my music, but here I tried to embrace the idea 100% and see how large and massive I could make my music.

The result is this approximately 40 minute piece for piano, electronics, surround sound – and watertower. This is slow music. The fundamental elements of music have been stretched out and scaled up – SKALA is the Danish word for scale. It was only after finishing the music I started wondering what the meaning of it was. My best guess so far is an alternation between dark pieces with a feeling of extreme resignation and failure and then lighter pieces that have a sense of acceptance and coming-to-terms-with.

This recording was made in a studio, but the enormous acoustics of the watertower are emulated using binaural mixing and adding a digital reverb, that was recorded in the watertower. Videographer Søren Meisner and a team of performers have made a video to accompany the entire album. It’s a fabulous companion piece for the album and I highly recommend downloading the video and getting the full experience by sitting in a darkish room with a laptop and headphones.

OG ØRKNER I RASENDE UDENFOR (2020)

WoetmannAlmholt LP på langs

A collaboration with poet Peter-Clement Woetmann. Woetmann reads four of his own poems and I have created piano-soundsculptures as accompaniment. On side A the poems refer to the Danish participation in the Afghanistan war. We see the war both from the soldier´s point of view and we glimpse into the horrifying future of war-technology. The entire of side B consists of one poem relating the dangerous voyages undertaken by immigrants crossing the Mediterranian. Released as vinyl and digital download available through bandcamp.

Tracklisting:

  1. Hvordan har du det?
  2. MAD MINUTE
  3. Om fremtiden
  4. Bag bakkerne, kysten

This album was co-produced with Kronstork.

With kind support from KODA, Dansk Komponist Forening and DJBFA.

KROPSBYGNING (2018)

Kropsbygning CD på langs

This is the third Ghost Flute & Dice album. It´s back to the solo-piano-and-effects setup of the first album. But this time Im playing odd time-meters, putting nuts and bolts inside the piano, playing the strings with a drumstick and combining all this with some glitchy, cut-up effects. The idea is to emphasize the mechanical and dissonant parts of the piano sound itself. The cover was designed and produced by Connie Munch.

Tracklisting

  1. Emdrup
  2. Kejser af Kina
  3. Glasvind
  4. Wrong is here
  5. Standardlösninger

This album was released by Attenuation Circuit and Obsolete Media Objects.

MELODY IS GOD (2015)

MIG-LP-paa-langsThe second album extending the piano with saxophone, guitar, vocals, violin and noisy soundscapes. Featuring performances by Danielle Dahl, Trine Odsgaard, Maria Diekmann, Ole Grøndal Jørgensen and Kristian Hverring. A kind of electronic chambermusic. Might take a couple of listens to find, but give it time and you will discover the melodies.

Tracklisting

  2. Chroma
  3. Audrey at the Mammoth
  4. Phrygian
  5. White
  6. Flat Minor

THE BUGAJ SESSIONS (2015)

Buga-paa-langsj

Not exactly a Ghost Flute & Dice album. This is a record by a loose group of musicians called Problemes de Communication. On this album that means Ole Grøndal Jørgensen, Thomas Wernberg and myself. This is music for mindtwisting videoart by Thomas Bugaj, a guy I met while touring in the USA. Problemes de Communication has made music for several artfilms and silent movies but this is unfortunately the only studio recording with this group.

More beautiful artwork by Connie Munch.

TRIANGULERING

Triangulering-paa-langs

A video made in collaboration with the visual artist Jacob Juhl. The film has been screened at two artfilm festivals – in Hungary and England. But since then it has been living a quiet life far away from the internet and potentiel viewers. We are currently working on a more ambitious and weirder project. You should check out the other stuff Jacob Juhl makes. http://www.jacobjuhl.dk

MEDITATION ON THE METHODICAL DISORIENTATION OF MEMORY (2012)

A group of commissioned songs for the Lyd+Litteratur festival in 2012. The songs all combine piano and poetry of some kind. Using poems by Johannes Lund Madsen, Gertrude Stein and one old demented lady. I played the set at two concerts for the festival. I also made a studio-recording, but its just lying around on my harddisc. But the song “Fra Mig til Dig” was a concert-closer for a couple a years. Probably the best song I ever made. Thanks to Rasmus, Jan, Trine, Valentin, Peter-Clement, Lea and Jonathan.
